The Soil Stained Glass Light Box 3m x 2.5m 2023

“My whole life had been spent waiting for an epiphany, a manifestation of God’s presence, the kind of transcendent, magical experience that lets you see your place in the big picture. And that is what I had with my first compost heap”. Bette Midler

Due to intensive farming methods, the world could run out of topsoil in 60 years, according to the UN. Without topsoil, the earth’s ability to filter water, absorb carbon, and feed people plunges.  ‘The Soil’  proposes we turn this situation around, by learning to work with the land rather than against it.  This gardener is standing over a compost heap, peeing in it to activate nitrogen and the composting process. A river of pee, painted on greenhouse glass with silver stain, flows to a  garden springing into life below her.

65% of the glass for ‘The Soil’ came from a Victorian greenhouse which had collapsed in a storm.
